Ed the Pig and Ron Lieske appear on Johnny Carson TONIGHT Show
“Ed” the 840 pound Pig appears on the NBC Tonight Show with legend Johnny Carson. This took place after Ron Lieske sent in information and numerous photos showing how big and tame pigs could be. “Ed” was named after Johnny’s sidekick, Ed McMahon. A special pen was made to Ron’s specs complete with rollers to enable the pig to be easily moved backstage at the NBC studio. Also appearing that night was Crystal Gayle who was early in her career.
Ron Lieske and his family were in the Swine Genetic Business. They had numerous farms located in Minnesota and they supplied swine breeding stock around the world.
Appearing on the Tonight Show for 16-minutes created tremendous exposure. Newspapers and magazines did articles on “Ed the Pig” for months. The UPS driver delivered countless items shipped to “Ed the Pig Henderson, MN” from his fans who saw him on TV. Items from scarfs to keep him warm made by children, to treats he could eat, etc.
Ed went on the co-author a pork cookbook, since he was the “expert”. This SuperPork Cookbook was for sale in mall book stores with Ed the Pig making live book signings around the Midwest area. He also appeared live in the studios of WCCO radio in Minneapolis, the Minnesota State Fair, and many more locations.
Ed eventually died of old age, but was preserved by a local taxidermist and to this day “Ed” hangs (like a moose head) on the office wall of Ron Lieske near Henderson, MN where Ron conducts numerous advertising, PR activities for companies…along with specializing in home-based business consulting.
